Field Hockey Falls in Semifinal Action Against Rochester

Vassar finishes at 13-6 overall

ROCHESTER, N.Y.  - The Vassar College Field Hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss in the Liberty League Championship Semifinal on the road at the University of Rochester on Friday night. The Brewers now sit at 13-6 overall while the Yellowjackets improve to 16-4 and advance to the Championship match to take on third-seeded William Smith, who defeated second-seeded Ithaca 1-0 in overtime in the other semifinal contest, on Sunday afternoon.

The Brewers earned the first penalty corner of the game at the 5:46 mark but were unable to record a shot. Rochester threatened with its own penalty corner with just over one minute remaining in the period when junior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made her first save of the game on Anya Arseneau.

Vassar earned a corner one minute into the second quarter as junior Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) and senior Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) each had shots turned away by Yellowjackets goalkeeper Kara Houston to keep the game scoreless. Rochester broke the scoreless tie off a corner at the 2:57 mark of the quarter as Maeve Fogarty scored off a deflection from a pass from Zoe Conomikes.

The Brewers picked up four more penalty corners before the end of the half but Houston was up to the task again and made a save on Bauman as sophomore Gianna Trunfio's (Clinton, NY) shot went wide and senior Ella Pearl's shot was blocked in front before the end of the half.

In the first seven minutes of the third quarter, Vassar received five corners as Trunfio and junior Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) each had shots blocked while Pearl had a shot saved by the Rochester goalkeeper. Dumaresq kept the game at a one score deficit when she turned away Conomikes opportunity with five minutes to go in the quarter.

The Yellowjackets pushed its lead out to two early in the fourth quarter as Delainey Hebble scored her fourth goal of the season on a cross from Conomikes. The Brewers had a flurry of chances in front a minute later when Houston made two saves on Trunfio and a third on junior Adah Anderson (San Diego, CA) as Rochester advanced to the championship match with a 2-0 victory.

Trunfio led the team in shots with five and had three shots on goal while Bauman added two shots on goal. Dumaresq took the loss in net for the Brewers and made two saves in the contest.

Conomikes finished the game with two assists while Hebble and Fogarty picked up the two goals. Houston made eight saves for Rochester as she earned the victory in goal.

Vassar held the edge in shots at 13-5 while outshooting the Yellowjackets 8-4 on goal. The Brewers also held a strong margin in penalty corners at 15-4.
