Women's Basketball Shoulders Loss to #3 NYU

Brewers saw two in double-figures in defeat to nationally-ranked Violets

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Powered by double-figure efforts from three different players, New York University posted an 80-44 win over Vassar College in non-league action on Friday at the AFC Gymnasium. The third-ranked Violets move to 3-0 overall, while the Brewers are now 1-4 on the young season.

The Violets were paced by senior guard Erica Miller, who notched a game-high 16 points with a rebound. She went 4-of-7 from three-point range, going 6-for-10 from the floor. Junior forward Natalie Bruns added 15 points, posting a game-best eight boards with a game-high four blocks, while sophomore guard Belle Pellecchia added 10 points and five rebounds along with a game-best four assists and a steal.

Vassar was paced by sophomore guard Julia Harvey, who notched 13 points with three boards to go along with an assist. Rookie guard Sierra McDermed added 10 points and three boards with a block and a steal, while freshman forward Caroline Siekman added a team-best two steals with an assist to go along with four boards.

NYU, which owned a 43-24 advantage after the opening two quarters of play, opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run backed by three shots from downtown – two of which came from Miller. The Brewers broke up the run as Harvey drained a layup, but the Violets countered as Miller struck from three-point range once again for the 58-26 margin at 6:02.

The Brewers saw Harvey sink another layup, followed by shots from freshman guards Maddie Ahearn and Naiya Kurnik to make it a 60-32 score with 1:06 to play as the Brewers continued to hold NYU off the scoreboard over the final 3:07 of the frame. McDermed sent the two teams into the final quarter, dropping in a three-point shot of her own for the 60-35 margin.

Fourth quarter action saw McDermed sink a layup, but the Violets sandwiched that shot around a pair of trey's and continued to widen the margin as sophomore guard Natalie Pence nailed back-to-back jumpers for a 33-point (70-37) lead with 6:40 to go.

Late in the frame, freshman guard Kolby Davis nailed a three-point for their first points of the game and sophomore guard Tova Gelb followed up with a jumper to make it 75-44 in the final 1:35. NYU's offense proved too strong as they went 5-0 down the stretch to close out the game.

Vassar returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts SUNY New Paltz at the AFC Gymnasium before the holiday break. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
