Field Hockey Set For Liberty League Championship

Fourth Seeded Brewers will host fifth seeded Skidmore on Tuesday evening

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Liberty League Field Hockey Championship field is set for next week as the Vassar College Field Hockey team will be seeded fourth and will play host to the fifth-seeded Skidmore Thoroughbreds (12-8, 3-4 LL) in a first round matchup on Tuesday, November 1 at 6:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field. Vassar finished the regular season with a 12-5 overall record and finished 5-2 in Liberty League action.

Vassar is led by leading scorer sophomore Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY), who has 10 goals on the season and has two game-winning goals. Junior Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) is second on the team in points with 20 as she has tallied eight goals, including two game-winners. and four assists for the Brewers while being named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week twice. Sophomore Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) has five goals on the year and four of them are game-winners and has been named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week once.

Juniors Kate Neikirk (Hayes, VA) and Heidi Compton (Clark, NJ) lead the team in minutes played in the backline for Vassar as the Brewers have only allowed 18 goals in 17 games this season. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) has put together another strong campaign for Vassar as she has posted a 1.03 goals against average while making 37 saves and posting four shutouts.

PREVIEWING SKIDMORE: Skidmore is led by leading scorer Carrie Hughes, who leads the conference in goals with 23 as well as points with 53. CC Wetter has tallied 11 goals while Kayla Hassett leads the team in assists with eight. Defenders Lauren Ruggiero and Gillian Maher each have three defensive saves for the Thoroughbreds while goalkeeper Victoria Bodnar leads the Liberty League in saves with 101 and has posted three shutouts.

REGULAR SEASON MATCHUP: In the regular season contest with Skidmore, the Brewers capitalized on two first quarter goals to defeat the Thoroughbreds, 2-1 at home on October 21. Trunfio recorded three points on the night as she assisted on senior Avery Bauman's (Westbrook, CT) goal and then scored the game-winner off an assist from Brigger. Ruggiero scored the goal for the Thorougbreds following a penalty corner insert from Tobi Dolan. Skidmore's defense made three defensive saves in the contest while  Bodnar made two stops. Dumaresq earned her 10th victory of the season in goal for the Brewers and made one save.

HOW TO FOLLOW: Tuesday's Liberty League First Round matchup will be streamed via Boxcast on our Field Hockey channel and the contest will have Live Stats available.

CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD: The Rochester Yellowjackets (15-4, 6-1) earned the top seed after finishing 6-1 in the conference and held the tiebreaker over second seeded Ithaca (14-3, 6-1). William Smith (14-4, 5-2) is seeded third due to holding the tiebreaker over Vassar. The winner of the Vassar/Skidmore contest on Tuesday will travel to Rochester on Friday while Ithaca will play host to William Smith at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Championship match will be held on Sunday, November 6 at the highest remaining seed.
