MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Wednesday evening as the Brewers fell 17-25, 13-25, 12-25 on the road at Montclair State. Sophomore
Hailey Hayes (Canyon Lake, TX) had four kills and three aces for Vassar as they drop to 4-18 overall.
Vassar got out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set after a kill from freshman
Ellie Kogan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed by a block from freshman
Rebecca Gutierrez (Oak Park, IL). After the Red Hawks took a 7-10 lead following a Carly Waterman kill, two kills for freshman
Molly Delahunty (Newton, MA) and one from Gutierrez gave the Brewers a two point advantage.Â
Montclair State took the lead back to 14-16 following a Vassar service error but a kill from sophomore
Frannie Anthony-Brumfield (Hanover, VA) cut the lead back to one. The Red Hawks scored the next six points after two kills from Delaney St. Pierre and Montclair State took the first set 17-25 following a winner from Mia Capriglione.
The Red Hawks raced out to a quick seven point lead in the second set before Vassar got on the board on a Hayes kill. Vassar went on a five point run on two aces from Hayes and two kills from Gutierrez to cut the Montclair State lead to three. The Red Hawks then scored five of the next seven before scoring the final six points of the set to win 13-25.
Sophomore
Morgan Miller (Lone Tree, CO) had two kills early in the third set as the set began with an early 4-4 tie. The Red Hawks then rallied out to a 9-19 before a solo block by junior
Ava Casalino (Portland, OR) and a kill from sophomore
Julia Hale (Hillsborough, CA) cut the lead back to eight. Casalino and Hale each added another kill late in the set but the Red Hawks won the match on a kill from Gianna Aries at 12-25.
Hayes and Gutierrez each had four kills for the Brewers in the contest while Hayes added her three aces. Gutierrez and Casalino each added a block while Kogan lifted a team-high 11 digs and freshman
Noa McCrane (Los Angeles, CA) added nine digs.
Leah Higgins buried a team-high 13 kills for the Red Hawks while Waterman finished with 10 kills. Katie Rodman landed three service aces while St. Pierre handed out 34 assists and added three blocks. Waterman led the team in digs with 14 while Emma Hatcher lifted 12 digs.
The Brewers will return to action for Senior Day on Saturday as Vassar will host a tri-match with New Paltz and William Paterson. The match with the Hawks will start at 11:00 a.m. while the Senior Day match with the Pioneers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
