Men's Soccer Powers Past Rensselaer, 2-1

Keker scores go-ahead in second half as Brewers defeat Engineers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Duncan Keker scored early in the second half and the Vassar College men's soccer team held on for a critical 2-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon on Gordon Field. The Brewers moved to 8-3-4 overall and 4-0-4 in league play, while the Engineers are now 5-6-5 with a 3-3-2 Liberty League record.

Locked in a 1-1 tie after the opening 45 minutes of action, Keker broke the stalemate in the 49th minute. Senior captain Owen Fauth set up for the corner on the far side, sending a perfectly placed ball into the middle of the box. Keker was there, driving the ball in on a header to give Vassar the 2-1 advantage.

The Engineers began a drive to pull things even in the 66th minute as sophomore midfielder Julio Rodriguez drove the ball in on the Vassar net, which was quickly saved by senior captain Eric Wnorowski. RPI followed up with a corner as junior defender Alex Garcia's header went just high and out of play.

Rensselaer had several other opportunities late in the game, including another Rodriguez shot that veered just wide and out of danger as the Brewers held on for the victory.

Vassar opened the games scoring early, taking the 1-0 advantage in the 2nd minute as rookie midfielder Jared Fiske drove past an RPI defender into the left corner of the box. He quickly sent a cross into the middle as Fauth sped past several defenders for the goal into the right corner past RPI's Colin Such.

The Engineers lone score came in the 7th minute as RPI was awarded a penalty kick opportunity after a takedown in the box. Graduate student Paul Silva stepped up for the shot, sinking it into the right corner past Wnorowski for the equalizer.

Vassar owned a 13-9 advantage in shots for the contest, while both teams had four shots on goal. The Brewers also owned a 6-4 edge on corner kicks.

In goal, Wnorowski posted three saves in the victory, while Such had two stops in the RPI net.

The Brewers are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Ithaca for the regular season finale for both teams at 2pm. Rensselaer also closes out the regular season on Saturday, welcoming Clarkson at 2pm to ECAV Stadium.
