FAIRFIELD, C.T. - The Vassar College Women's Rugby team suffered its first loss on Saturday afternoon as Fairfield defeated the Brewers 41-19 at the hosts homecoming weekend. Three different players recorded a try for Vassar in the contest.
There is no doubt that the home team rose to the occasion and a large crowd was on hand to watch this contest as Fairfield grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and took control in the early stages.
Fairfield took a 5-0 lead but Vassar responded with a forwards try as
Andie Authers went over and with
Zoe Lynch's conversion it was a 7-5 lead. But Fairfield regained the initiative following some miscues and a 10-7 advantage. That quickly became 17-7 before the halftime intermission as Vassar was down by 10 and there was an opportunity to reset and address issues.
The Vassar Women did rally following the intermission and in fact scored twice to to take a 19-17 lead midway through the second half. The forwards carried a real sense of purpose about the attack. Vassar had scored tries to take that lead with freshman
Yasmeen Kassem-Scott going over and then center
Zoe Lynch made the whitewash.
But any momentum Vassar had generated slipped away as Fairfield's backs looked sharp and speedy as Vassar fell behind 22-19 and then 27-19. Fairfield converted two more tries to conclude the match with a 41-19 victory.
Fairfield finishes the regular season first at 5-0 and with that it is the number 1 seed going into the Conference playoffs. Vassar will be the number 2 seed heading into the conference playoffs.
Vassar will return to action on the road next weekend as the Brewers travel to Bowdoin. Kickoff with the Polar Bears in Brunswick, ME is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
