Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie at St. Lawrence

Liberty League's only unbeaten teams battle to draw

CANTON, N.Y. - In a battle of the Liberty League's only unbeaten teams, Vassar College and St. Lawrence University remained that way with a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Stadium. The Saints are now 8-1-5 with a 4-0-3 league mark, while the Brewers are 7-3-3 and 3-0-3 in the Liberty League.

The Saints got on the scoreboard quickly as Michael McDougald scored 14 seconds into the game. Banking in a pass from Sam Pijpers, St. Lawrence grabbed the 1-0 lead.

Vassar had several solid chances to even the game up, including a pair of shots from sophomore midfielder Duncan Keker that SLU goalie Ben Woelfinger was able to save. The Brewers saw a number of corner attempts, having several shots blocked by the Saints defense before finally breaking through with the equalizer.

Lining up for a corner kick in the 40th minute, senior captain Owen Fauth sent a perfectly placed ball into the middle of the fray in the box. Classmate and midfielder Ryan Lane was there, leaping for the header goal to tie the game at 1-all.

Second half action opened with the Brewers once again peppering the Saints end. Vassar nearly got the go-ahead in the 69th minute as Lane dropped a shot in on goal that Woelfinger was quick to scoop up. The Brewers had several corner attempts, but saw the Saints defense step up with several blocked shots to keep things locked in the draw.

For the contest, Vassar owned a 13-10 margin in shots, including 4-3 on goal. The Brewers, who saw senior keeper Eric Wnorwowski make two saves, also owned an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. SLU saw Woelfinger make three stops in the loss.

The Brewers return to the pitch next Saturday, hosting Hobart College on Gordon Field at 2pm. That game will also be Senior Day for Vassar's Class of 2023 graduates!
