SCHENECTADY, NY – Union College scored a timely first half goal and that effort stood as the Dutchwomen posted a 1-0 win over Vassar College in Liberty League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen are now 8-1 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in league action, while the Brewers move to 5-3-2 with a 2-1-0 Liberty League record.
The Brewers came out strong in the opening half, testing Union keeper Abby Mitty with back-to-back shots from sophomore midfielder
London Wilkes, which the goalie saved seconds apart in the 29th minute.
Despite that momentum, Union's Liz DiCecco sent a shot in at the 34 minute mark that was stopped by Vassar keeper
Teresa Zimmer and the Dutchwomen capitalized three minutes later as Meghan Piser sent one in for the go-ahead score.
Second half action once again saw the Brewers attacking the net as senior defender
Isabel Leinenweber drove in consecutive shots in the 53rd minute that went just wide, followed by a narrowly high shot by senior captain
Sydney MacDonald in the 64th minute.
Senior captain
Violet Munnelly nearly put in the equalizer in the 73rd minute, but Union goalie Rachel Berliner was there to make the stop and preserve the shutout. The Brewers had a pair of corners in the late stages of the match, but were unable to convert for a goal.
Vassar owned a 12-8 advantage in shots, while both teams were even in shots on goal with a 4-4 margin. The Brewers also had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, Union's Mitty played the opening half and posted three saves, while Berliner played the second half and made one stop. Zimmer shouldered the loss for the Brewers, recording three saves on the afternoon.
Vassar returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it hosts Russell Sage College on Gordon Field. Game time is set for 3:30pm.
