POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Senior captain
Sara Rubinelli scored a dramatic goal in the 83rd minute to lift the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Montclair State University at Gordon Field on Wednesday evening. The Brewers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Red Hawks are now 2-1 overall.
Following a scoreless opening half of action, both teams picked up the pace quickly in the second stanza. Vassar was the first to find its way onto the scoreboard as junior midfielder
Sydney MacDonald recorded her first of the season. Earning the corner kick - Vassar's lone attempt of the second frame - rookie forward
Emily Foote sent a perfect cross into the middle that bent just left. MacDonald was there at the far post, lifting up for a low kick that sent the ball into the back of the net in the 72nd minute.
Montclair State answered two minutes later as freshman defender Emmi DeNovellis lined up for a free kick in the Vassar zone. She sent a high cross toward the left corner, right onto the head of graduate student and forward Zoe Steck, who banked it into the left corner past Brewers keeper
Teresa Zimmer in the 74th minute.
Locked in the 1-all tie, it was Rubinelli who broke it, taking a free kick from about 10-yards inside the midfield line. Her long arching shot took an odd bounce in front of Red Hawks goalie Haley Martin, angling high over her head and into the net for the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute.
Both teams fought for changes over the final seven minutes, but the defense proved strong down the stretch as the Brewers held on for the victory.
In goal, Zimmer earned the win making four stops on the afternoon. Martin also made four saves in the Montclair State net. Both teams posted 10 shots in the contest, while the Brewers held a 5-3 edge in corners for the game.
Vassar is back in action on Saturday when it hosts the University of Scranton at 11:30am on Gordon Field. Montclair State is also in action Saturday, hosting Ursinus at 3pm.
