SCRANTON, PA - Senior hitter
Claire Basler-Chang posted a match-high 13 kills, but the Vassar College women's volleyball team was unable to battle back, falling 3-1 (13-25, 25-14, 24-26, 17-25) to the University of Scranton. The homestanding Royals, who are hosting this weekend's invitational, improve to 2-0 on the season. The Brewers slip to 0-1 in their season opener.
After shouldering a tough loss in the opening set, the Brewers evened things up in the second stanze, capitalizing on a 25-14 victory. The two teams battled to the wire in the third set, as Scranton edged Vassar by a 26-24 margin. The Royals came out determined in the fourth, securing the match victory with a 25-17 win.
Scranton saw Sofia Dedaj also post a match-best 13 kills to lead the Royals. Stephanie Margolies added 11 kills, 15 digs and a match-high seven service aces, while Trinity Manning had nine kills. Molly Dunfee posted a match-best 27 digs, also adding three aces, while Eryn Boken notched two block solos, two block assists and two service aces as well.
Vassar was paced by Basler-Chang's 13 kills and team-best four service aces, while also adding 10 digs. Senior hitter
Camille Donald posted seven kills, as rookie outside hitter
Hailey Hayes had six kills, two aces and eight digs. Senior libero
Sara Ehnstrom led the Brewers with 21 digs, while senior setter
Madison Wilson had 27 assists, a service ace, two kills and six digs.
The Brewers are back in action at the Scranton Tournament on Saturday at 1pm. Vassar faces Western Connecticut State to open the day's action, followed by a 4pm contest against Lebanon Valley to close out tournament action.
