ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – Powered by a four-goal opening half, the Vassar College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory at Bard College in Liberty League action on Wednesday. The win moves the Brewers – now ranked #3 in the United Soccer Coaches Regional Rankings – to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league action. The Raptors are now 1-6 with an 0-3 Liberty League mark.
The Brewers struck first in the opening half of action, taking the 1-0 advantage behind a strike from sophomore midfielder
Justine Tapert in the ninth minute. Off a cross from the near side the banked into the middle, sophomore forward
Ariana Pjetri battled with a defender for the ball, getting the touch that went to the far side. Tapert came down the right side, burying the ball into the goal.
Sophomore forward
Jacqueline Morrison made it a two-goal edge (2-0) less than two minutes later. Crossing the mid-line on the near side, junior middie
Jessica Young sent a great pass toward the middle and a speeding Morrison. Outrunning a defender, Morrison sent a long high shot into the open goal as the Raptors keeper Seymone Rosenberg had come out for a potential one-on-one.
It would be Morrison once again for the Brewers third tally of the opening half, notching her tally in the 23rd minute. Corralling a loose ball in the mid-circle, Pjetri turned and passed the ball up the middle past Morrison and a Bard defender. Using outstanding speed, Morrison outran everyone, dribbling up the right side before sending a quick shot to the left past the reach of the Bard goalie.
Vassar rookie
London Wilkes turned it into a 4-0 advantage for the visitors in the 35th minute. Off a clear attempt at mid-field, sophomore midfielder
Julia Farnham sent a long ball up. Wilkes outran the Bard defender, cut right and fired it past Bard's keeper and in.
In the second half, the Brewers pushed the edge to 5-0 following the fourth goal of the season for senior forward
Skylar Herrera-Ross. Vassar came in on the attack as rookie midfielder
Noelle Namba corralled a cross from the far side in the middle. Her shot was saved by Bard goalie Madeline Chilton, but the ball ricocheted out to open left side. Herrera- Ross ran through the box and buried the ball in the 66th minute.
Vassar concluded its scoring in the closing seconds as junior forward
Adie Amore sent a high cross up the middle from the near side. Pjetri was there, racing to the ball, firing in a high shot of her own in the 89th minute for the final score.
In the Brewers goal, rookie starter
Julia Reigrut played the opening 45 minutes of action to earn the win while not being forced to make any saves. Sophomore
Claire Mackenzie came on in the second half, also not being forced to make any saves for the combined Vassar shutout. Bard saw its starter, Rosenberg make four saves in the opening half, while Chilton came on in the second half of action, recording nine stops.
Vassar returns to the pitch on Saturday when it hosts Union at Gordon Field for a 3pm Liberty League tilt. Bard is also in action on Saturday at 3pm, welcoming nationally-ranked William Smith in a league match-up.
