HOBOKEN, NJ – Powered by an eight-save performance from freshman keeper
Julia Reigrut, the Vassar women's soccer team held off Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday at DeBaun Athletic Complex. The Brewers are now 4-2 on the season, while the Ducks slip to 1-4-1 overall.
The lone goal of the contest came in the 29th minute as senior
Skylar Herrera-Ross capitalized on an opportunity following a takedown inside the box. Awarded a penalty kick, the senior forward sent a low shot into the right corner past a diving Izzy Didario for the 1-0 advantage.
That tally held up despite a strong second half of action from the homestanding Ducks – who held the Brewers to just two shots on goal in the contest. Reigrut, who had three stops in the opening 45 minutes, was even better in the second half stopping a number of outstanding shots by Stevens to keep things tied.
Sophomore defender Gab Aloe tested the Vassar keeper in the 59th minute, sending a long shot in from the right side. Reigrut lept in the air, knocking the ball away and over the crossbar out of danger. Another solid stop came in the 65th minute as sophomore forward Nina Burden rifled in a shot from 15-yards out, which Reigrut dove to save and send left out of danger.
Reigrut's biggest stop came in the 79th minute as senior midfielder Nicole Veraja charged in after a high arching ball that the Vassar keeper came out to play. The pair collided and the ball came loose, but as Reigrut dove forward, she wrapped her arms around the ball before impacting with the ground and gave Vassar possession once again.
The Brewers, who staved off a high shot by Veraja in the 85th minute, nearly converted their own shot in the 88th minute but junior middie
Jessica Young's shot went just high and left of the Stevens goal.
Reigrut improved to 2-1 on the season with her eight-save effort, while her counterpart, Didario shouldered the loss, moving to 1-4-0 on the year with one save against the Brewers.
Vassar returns to action on Saturday when it opens Liberty League play at home. The Brewers welcome Rochester Institute of Technology to Gordon Field for a 12pm contest. Stevens is back in action on Friday, hosting #7 Trinity (Texas) at the DeBaun Athletic Complex at 7pm.
