WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Vassar College women's volleyball team put forth a hard-fought effort, paced by 10 kills from rookie
Hailey Hayes, but it was Williams College with the 3-0 victory on Wednesday evening. The victory moves the Ephs to 4-0 overall, while the Brewers are now 2-5 on the season.
It was an evenly matched first set with Vassar holding the lead for most of the frame. Up by a 9-8 margin, the Brewers opened the gap behind a kill from senior hitter
Claire Basler-Chang, quickly followed by a service ace from senior setter
Madison Wilson for the 11-9 advantage. Despite the momentum, the homestanding Ephs capitalized on a seven-point run to grab the 24-19 advantage.
The Brewers pulled it back to within two (24-22) behind two kills from Hayes and an ace from senior libero
Sara Ehnstrom, but Williams held on for the opening set win by a 25-22 score.
Second set action saw Williams jump out to an early edge, but outstanding service ace from Hayes allowed Vassar to narrow the Ephs lead to 11-8. Following a kill from Williams junior Kiley Wallace, the Ephs continued to build their advantage going on for the 25-14 set win.
In the third set, Williams led throughout, but the Brewers made it interesting as a kill from Hayes, a service ace from Basler-Chang and an error turned a one-point deficit into a 22-21 advantage for Vassar. Williams countered with back-to-back kills to regain the lead, but another kill from Hayes, combining with a setting error on Williams made it narrow edge for the Brewers. Williams countered in the end, capitalizing on several Brewers errors to close out the match with a 25-23 set win and match victory.
In addition to her 10 kills, Hayes also had seven digs. Wilson added 21 asssits, while Basler-Chang had nine kills with seven digs.
Vassar is now idle until September 24 when it opens Liberty League action at Skidmore College at 4pm.
