Engineers Down Brewers in Game One No Hitter; Vassar Late Comeback Not Enough in Game Two

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team (7-13) dropped a pair of Liberty League games to the visiting RPI Engineers (6-8) on Sunday afternoon. Senior pitcher Jake Nichols recorded the complete game no-hitter for RPI, going 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts to take game one 4-0. Vassar played from behind the entire second game, but a late rally cut the score to three in the ninth, but the Brewers still fell 8-11.

It was a pitching battle early on in the first game. Senior Matt McGannon struck out three Engineers' batters in the first inning, and the game was scoreless until the top of the fourth. Peter Close singled to right field to bring in a run, and then a single by Ben Koomey brought Hudson Livesey home.

RPI scored again in the fifth behind a two-RBI double from Livesey to left field. Vassar reached base one time for the remainder of the game but could not heat up to get home. McGannon earned four strikeouts in 5.0 innings, while sophomore Cole Eggleston pitched 2.0 innings and gave up no runs or hits with two strikeouts.

Once again, the game was kept scoreless until the fourth inning in game two. Jake Defayette got the Engineers rolling with a home run to right field to make it 1-0. Martin Marintchez then hit a two-run home run to center field. Close scored another run when he stole home.

RPI kept building its lead until Vassar scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Cameron Skudin singled to shortstop, bringing Gunnar Widercrantz home, and an Andrew Kanellis single brought Alex Warren in for the run. The Engineers responded with two runs of their own in the seventh to make it 9-2. With Patrick Fitzgerald pinch-running, he reached home after Elliot Layne grounded out to the third base.

Vassar scored two more in the eighth to put the score at 11-5, and in the bottom of the ninth added three more. A Jaden Millstein triple brought in three RBI, and Vassar had three left on base with two outs. Unfortunately, the final Brewer batter flew out to the left field to prevent the comeback.

Skudin had three hits on the day, while Kanellis and Jason Salerno each had two. Millstein finished with a game-high four RBI. Logan Willans (2-2) went 4.0 innings and struck out six batters.

Koomey (1-1) went 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
