Men's Tennis Suffers 5-3 Loss at RPI in League Seminfinals

Brewers end 2021 season with a 4-2 record

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) used a dominant effort in singles action to power their way to a 5-3 victory over Vassar College in the Liberty League Semifinals in men's tennis on Thursday morning. The Engineers move to 5-0 on the season and will host the winner of the second Semifinal between #3 Skidmore and #2 Hobart on Saturday at Sharp Courts. The Brewers conclude their season with a 4-2 overall mark.

Doubles action got underway with the Engineers earning their first point from the top flight as graduate student Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and senior Andrew Imrie combined for an 8-4 victory over Vassar senior duo David Gandham and Adam Krueger. The Brewers bounced back as junior Mihajlo Ivanovic and rookie Arun Guruswamy bested senior Winston Yu and sophomore Abraham Yohannes at three by an 8-4 margin. VC then took the 2-1 lead following the second doubles match as rookies Jay Wong and Benjamin Almquist defeated senior Brian Niguidula and junior Peter Lohrbach, 8-4.

RPI evened the match at 2-all heading into singles play as Yohannes earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Guruswamy at five. Castillo-Sanchez put the Engineers ahead from one, besting Gandham by a 6-1, 6-1 margin. The Brewers once again battled back, paced by Ivanovic from six as he defeated sophomore Phoenix Tamaoki, 6-3, 6-1 to make it 3-3.

Despite that momentum, the Brewers were unable to hold off RPI, which saw Imrie earn a 6-3, 6-1 win against Wong from two, followed by the match point at five as Niguidula bested Krueger, 6-1, 6-2.
