Brewers Rally In Game Two to Complete Sunday Sweep Over Union

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team showcased one of its strongest performances of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Brewers picked up two key victories over Liberty League opponent Union at Prentiss Field. Bats were hot in game one, with the Brewers totaling 19 hits and winning 16-8, and then it was a pitching battle in game two with the Brewers edging out the Dutchmen 3-2.

Game one started rough. The Brewers gave up five runs in the top of the first to go down early but responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Ezra Caspi got the Brewers rolling with a double to right field, giving Jaden Millstein the run. Bryce Grathwohl doubled to center field for two RBI, and he reached home when Adam Talwalkar grounded out at his at-bat.

Vassar added five more runs in the second to take a 10-5 lead. During that run, Talkwalkar, Gunnar Widercrantz, and Millstein each had a double. Momentum carried over into the third with four more runs. Grathwohl added two RBI with a single to center field. Grathwohl and Jason Salerno tacked on two more runs to make it 14-5.

Union was not out of the fight yet, though, scoring twice in the fourth to bring in to 14-7. Vassar added two runs in the bottom of the fourth following an Andrew Kanellis sacrifice fly. The Brewers blanked the Dutchmen in the fifth and sixth and held on for the victory.

Ten Vassar batters recorded hits on the day, and Grathwohl led the way with four hits and five RBI. He also added three runs. Widercrantz tacked on three hits, while Caspi led the team with four runs. Senior Patrick Fitzgerald (3-1) pitched 6.0 innings and struck out a career-high ten batters.

For Union, Matt Toy led the team with two hits and four RBI. Jack Koch recorded a team-high two runs.

Things calmed down in game two, and the game was scoreless until the seventh inning. Senior pitcher Matt McGannon went the first seven innings and struck out six batters while only giving up one run and four hits. Union got on the board first after a Brewers' miscue at the top of the seventh when Kevin Chaimowit stole home following a walk. Vassar tied things 1-1 when Salerno singled to center field to give Kanellis the run.

The Dutchmen retook the lead following a Joey Palko single to go ahead 2-1 in the eighth. At the bottom of the eighth, Millstein walked for the first at-bat, and Alex Warren was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Caspi struck out swinging, but Kanellis launched a double to left-center field to bring both Warren and Millstein home.

Junior Dawson Dullnig came in to pitch the ninth inning, striking out the final two Union batters to give Vassar the victory.

Vassar wraps up the regular season next weekend against RPI on Saturday and Sunday. The Brewers first face the Engineers on May 8 at Troy, NY at 1 p.m.
