Brewers Drop Two to Dutchmen

Vassar falls 8-1 and 10-5 to Union

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader against Union on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Brewers fell 8-1 in the first game and lost 10-5 in the second. Vassar moves to 1-3 overall, while Union is undefeated at 2-0.

The Dutchmen pitching set the tone for game one, allowing only two Brewer hits with 12 strikeouts. After a scoreless first inning, Union got on the board first when Chris O'Brien ran in for the score. The Dutchmen scored again in the third inning following a home run from Kevin Chaimowitz's home run. Union's success continued in the fourth, with Colin Kelly hitting a three-run home run to put the Dutchmen up 5-0.

Another two Union home runs by Kelly and William Bellamy made it 8-0 at the bottom of the sixth. Vassar prevented the shutout in the final inning when Nick Greenhawt launched his first-career home run down left field.

Joe Sabo (0-1) started for Vassar, pitching 3.0 innings with three hits and three strikeouts. Dawson Dullnig pitched 2.0 innings and struck out two batters. James Salemme (1-0) earn the win for Union, pitching 5.0 innings while giving up only one hit. He also had nine strikeouts.

The Vassar offense picked up in game two, but Union's hot hitting gave the Dutchmen their second win. Neither team scored until the third inning when Chaimowitz hit a grand slam to put Union ahead 4-0. Brent Shimoda cut the lead to three when he sent his first-career home run down left field. A Vassar wild pitch and a fielding error gave up three more runs in the fourth, and then Noah Schott singled to bring in two runners to make it 9-1.

Vassar would chip away at the Union lead in the fifth. A sacrifice fly from Jaden Millstein allowed Jason Salerno to score. Soon after, Ezra Caspi singled to right field, which brought in Cameron Skudin for another run. A walk with bases loaded in the seventh allowed Skudin to score again, cutting the Dutchmen's lead to 10-4. Vassar scored once more in the ninth. Caspi grounded out to the shortstop, giving Millstein the chance to score.

Patrick Fitzgerald (1-1) pitched 3.2 innings for Vassar, giving up four hits and striking out six Union batters. Ty Langford pitched 2.0 innings with two strikeouts. Kyle Patlove (1-0) earns the win and had one strikeout.

Vassar has their home opener next Saturday when they welcome Skidmore to Prentiss Field. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
