Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 2 Vassar Falls to No. 3 Dominican In NCAA Quarterfinals

SALEM, VA – The Brewers' impressive season has come to an end. The No. 2 Vassar men's volleyball team fell 0-3 (23-25, 18-25, and 23-25) to No. 3 Dominican (IL) in Thursday's NCAA Division III Quarterfinals at the Salem Civic Center. Vassar finishes the season at 9-4, while Dominican moves to 17-1 and advances to the Elite 8 match against No. 1 Carthage.

The Stars jumped out to a 10-6 advantage in the first set, but the Brewers slowly chipped away at the lead. With Dominican up 13-11, Vassar used a 3-0 run comprised of an Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) kill and a service ace by Gavin van Beveren (Alpharetta, GA) to take its first lead. Both sides traded points, with neither pulling ahead until a Stars' service error put the Brewers up 19-18. Dominican gained some momentum after that, using a 5-0 span with kills by Adrian Cebula, George Kougan, and Jack McGuire to retake the lead at 23-19.

A kill by sophomore Joseph Harrington (San Diego, CA) cut the set to three, and then two Stars' attack errors and a van Beveren solo block tied it again at 23-23. Dominican then closed the set with two straight points to go up 1-0.

The second set appeared to be staying close early on when Vassar rattled off three consecutive points to tie 14-14. Dominican capitalized on five Vassar errors and then a kill by Mat Molloy to go ahead 20-15. Two kills by Andrew Kim kept the Brewers within striking distance, but three more unanswered scores kept the Stars in control. Kougan knocked in the set-winning kill.

Kills by Harrington and van Beveren spurred a run that gave the Brewers their largest lead of the match at 6-3. Some strong blocking by Dominican kept the set close until Kim sent it a kill to push the game to 7-5. Vassar went up by three once again, but a 6-0 Dominican run gave all the lead the Stars needed. Vassar went on to cut the set to one before the end, but it was Dominican coming out with the sweep.

Andrew Kim led the Brewers with 14 kills while adding a block and three digs. Van Beveren tacked on eight kills and an ace. Jacob Kim (Pleasanton, CA) finished with a career-high 11 digs with 26 assists.

For the Stars, Kougan had nine kills, while Cebula and Trey Cowan each tallied eight. Troy Kates made six block assists, and McGuire led the team with 22 assists.
