POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer dropped a 0-2 decision to St. Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon at Gordon Field in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament. With the loss, the Brewers see their season come to an end while the Saints advance to face Ithaca on Saturday.
The Saints netted the opening goal at the 14th minute when Robert Reynolds crossed the ball from the left side of the Brewers box off to Marvin Sibanda, who chipped the shot into the middle of the open net. St. Lawrence kept the game physical following the goal, and Vassar struggled to find any offensive chances. The Saints went on to outshoot the Brewers 14-5 in the first half, but goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) regained his composure by making six saves.
Vassar performed better in the second half, but St. Lawrence continued to keep the pressure on any Brewer possession. Junior Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) recorded the opening shot in the half, but goalie Ben Woelfinger made the stop. Two offside calls on the Saints and a save from Wnorowski gave Vassar the ball until it was turned over in the midfield. Kyle Graber broke through the defense and crossed the ball to Antonio Rogliano, who headed the shot in for the second score.
Vassar managed ten shots in the half but struggled to find any open looks. A Saints' red card with under a minute to play gave the Brewers their best chance to score with a penalty shot attempt. The goalkeeper held in, though, making the stop and earning the shutout.
Wnorowski finished the day with eight saves, while Woelfinger had six.
Vassar finishes the season at 11-4-2 overall.
