ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY - Behind a career-high 23 kills from senior captain and utility
Sara Ehnstrom, the Vassar women's volleyball team powered its way to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 25-10) victory at Bard on Wednesday evening in Liberty League action. The win moves the Brewers to 6-8 overall with a 2-3 league mark, while the Raptors are now 5-11 and 1-4 in Liberty League play.
Ehnstrom led all players with 23 kills, committing just three errors on 42 total attempts for a .476 hitting percentage. She also added a season-high four service aces, notching seven digs as well. Rookie outside hitter
Hailey Hayes recorded 10 kills in the match, also boasting four service aces with an assist and eight digs. Senior setter and captain
Madison Wilson posted a match-best 40 assists, adding a match-high 17 digs with a service ace, while rookie outside hitter
Morgan Miller added seven kills, 10 digs and two service aces. Sophomore hitter
Ava Casalino led all players with three block solos.
Opening set action saw a close match until the 14-10 mark, when a service error by the Raptors sent the visiting Brewers on a run that saw them grab five straight points for a 20-11 advantage. Ehnstrom, Hayes, Wilson and Miller all had kills during the stretch, while senior hitter
Jamie Kesten added a service ace. Bard pulled it back to within 23-17 behind a Brewers error and kills from Emily Smith and Laurel Edwards, but Vassar captialized on a service error by the home team, coupled with an Ehnstrom kill for the 25-17 set win.
Second set saw the Brewers open a commanding lead, but a kill from Anna Skarnser and a Vassar error closed the gap eventually to 8-6. The Brewers used a five-point swing late to turn it from a 14-12 game to a 19-12 advantage, as Hayes and Ehnstrom each laid down kills. Bard continued to battle, but a final kill from Ehnstrom and several Raptors errors handed VC another 25-17 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Following a close third set, that saw the homestanding Raptors claim a 25-22 victory, the Brewers came out strong in the fourth, owning a 14-6 edge quickly. A seven-point swing, aided by three service aces from Hayes, turned it into a 21-7 advantage. Bard was able to capitalize on a pair of Vassar errors late, but it was sandwiched between two Ehnstrom kills as the Brewers won 25-10 and claimed the 3-1 match win.
Vassar is now idle until October 22 when it opens a big Liberty League weekend at home. The Brewers face RIT at 7pm on Friday at Kenyon Gym, followed by a 2pm contest against Ithaca the following day.
