Oneonta Snaps Vassar’s Four-Game Winning Streak

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Vassar baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Oneonta on Monday morning. The Red Dragons recorded ten hits opposed to the Brewers three, with senior Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) scoring Vassar's only run off an Ezra Caspi (Holmdel, NJ) RBI in the fifth inning. Vassar suffers their first loss, falling to 4-1. Oneonta moves to 2-2 overall.

Junior Patrick Fitzgerald (Phoenix, MD) served as Vassar's starting pitcher. He struck out one batter and allowed just one hit in the first inning. Junior Jason Salerno (Dix Hills, NY) was first at-bat for the Brewers, reaching first base off a Oneonta shortstop error. The next three Vassar batters could not capitalize, and all went out.

After walking Jonathan Lezette, Patrick McGee singled to left-center to put runners on first and third. Lezette scored after the next batter grounded out to third, and then McGee got tagged out to end the inning. Vassar was unable to respond, and at the top of the third, Oneonta added four more runs. Two Red Dragons scored from a James Zupo single and then two more reached home after Lezette singled to left field. Freshman Ryan Harris (Langhorne, PA) made his first pitching appearance after that and tacked on one strikeout before the inning ended.

The Vassar offense could not find a hit, and Oneonta added three more runs in the fifth. With the score 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Levchuck doubled down the left-field line. A popup to the shortstop gave Vassar one out, and then Tanner Blough (Carlsbad, CA) singled to put Levchuck at third. Caspi came in to pinch-hit, grounding out to the second base, but allowing Levchuck to score. Oneonta kept it up though, tallying two more runs in the sixth.

Vassar continues the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tues. Mar. 9 against Wells at 3:30 p.m.
