SEWANEE, TN – Sophomore attacker
Melanie Silverman scored four goals with four assists to help lift Vassar College to a 21-8 win over Sewanee: The University of the South, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday evening at Puett Field. The victory moves the Brewers to 4-0 on the young season, while the Tigers move to 4-5.
First half action opened with a bang for the Brewers as VC jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the opening six minutes of the stanza. Silverman (Southbury, CT) connected first, less than a minute in, as she fired in a pass from freshman defender
Trina Chou (Sunnyvale, CA) from point-blank range. At the 27-minute mark, junior midfielder
Haydn Hallman (Bechtelsville, PA) put the visitors up, connecting two minutes later to push Vassar to a 3-0 advantage.
Junior attacker
Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) added a goal at 24:44 to push the Brewers lead to four (4-0), but the homestanding Tigers finally broke onto the scoreboard 40 seconds later as senior attack Preston Cooper (Vero Beach, FL) converted a Grace Zechman (Lancaster, PA) pass. Hallman then knocked in her third of the contest at 23:02, and a three-goal run soon after helped make it an 8-2 edge for Vassar.
Sewanee added another tally to cut the deficit to five (8-3), but another three-goal stretch, paced by a goal and an assist from rookie attacker
Kateri Sanseviro (Bayport, NY) pushed the Brewers to an 11-3 lead with 12:54 to play in the opening frame.
The Tigers got three goals from junior midfielder Sarah Strand (Natick, MA) over the final 10:27, but Hallman's fourth of the contest, coupled with goals by senior captain
Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) and sophomore midfielder
Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY), sent Vassar into the locker room with a 14-6 lead. The goal for Waters marked the 100th of her career, making her the 11th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Second half action opened in favor of the Tigers as sophomore midfielder Hadley Meadows (Lynchburg, VA) collected the loose ball off an earlier save and buried it past VC keeper
Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) at 26:51.
The Brewers though, wasted little time in answering, as Silverman knocked in her second of the game at the 25:36 mark to open the eight-goal edge (15-7) once more. Her goal set off another three-score run for Vassar, who built up a 17-7 edge at 22:55 to activate the 10-goal differential running clock, as Fable also scored with Silverman adding her third on the tail end.
A goal from Cooper helped stop the running clock, but the reprieve was short-lived as Sanseviro fired in a Silverman pass to regain the 10-goal (18-8) advantage with 20:59 to play in the second.
Vassar utilized that running clock time, and in addition to a majority of possession throughout the remainder of the frame, played solid defense in the midfield to keep Sewanee off the scoreboard.
In addition to Silverman, who also had a ground ball, the Brewers saw Hallman add four goals with two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control. Sanseviro chipped in with three goals and an assist, while senior captain
