Men's Lacrosse Shoulders Tough Loss to Swarthmore

Garnet post 16-7 win to spoil Brewers home opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Swarthmore College broke open a close contest, scoring seven goals in the fourth quarter, as they bested Vassar College by a 16-7 margin at Weinberg Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers, who were making their home debut for 2020, are now 0-2, while the visiting Garnet improves to 1-2 on the young season.

Facing a 3-0 deficit following the first quarter of play, the Brewers rebounded to open the second frame as junior attack Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NJ) fired in a pass from senior captain Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) less than a minute into the period. Five minutes later, sophomore middie Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) slid one in low to close the gap to 3-2.

Swarthmore pulled the edge back to two as junior midfielder Scott Eberle (Hummelstown, PA) scored, but Vassar narrowed the score once again as Duryee potted his second of the contest with 8:06 to play. Despite the momentum, the Garnet scored a pair of goals to close out the half with a 6-3 edge.

Third quarter action started with a bang as senior captain Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) won the face-off, tore into the zone and flipped a quick pass to Mullen for the score just eight seconds in. The Garnet countered with a score by senior attack Austin Chang (Morris Plains, NJ) just over a minute later.

Down 7-4, Mullen scored once again, this time off a beautiful pass from junior captain Zack Henig (Millstone, NJ), but two more scores to close out the third saw the Brewers facing a 9-5 deficit.

A Garnet goal opened the fourth quarter, but Vassar quickly countered with another goal from Mullen as he stuffed in a Deehan pass to make it a four-goal margin (10-6) with 10:09 to play. Momentum turned in the visitors favor soon after as a string of six straight goals over a six-minute span built up the Garnet lead to 16-6.

Sophomore midfielder Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY) scored at the 2:14 mark, connecting off a feed from senior attack Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) but the Swarthmore defense held strong.

Mullen paced the Brewers with three goals and two assists, adding a ground ball.
