Women's Volleyball Edged By Saints, 3-2

Brewers fall in close Liberty League match to St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY (September 28, 2019) - Despite a match-high 18 kills from sophomore Claire Basler-Chang, the Vassar College women's volleyball team was unable to get past St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the homestanding Saints to 14-3 overall with a 2-0 mark in league play. The Brewers are now 4-11 with an 0-2 Liberty League clip.

The visitors opened the contest in fine fashion, posting wins of 25-22 and 25-20 to take a 2-0 match advantage. The Brewers found themselves trailing 21-18 in the opening set, but a 4-0 run, which included a pair of kills from Basler-Chang, shifted momentum for a 22-21 lead for the Brewers. SLU tied the match on an attacking error by VC, but a kill from senior Jennifer Kerbs and a pair of Saints' errors gave the visitors the lead.

Second set saw the two teams battle back and forth until a 6-0 run with kills from senior Colette Cambey, Basler-Chang and sophomore Jamie Kesten flipped the lead to 21-14 in favor of the Brewers. The Saints made it interesting down the stretch, but VC capitalized on several errors to seal the win.

St. Lawrence powered back in the third set, gaining a 19-15 advantage following a kill from Marissa Parker. Follow-up kills from Julia Wagner helped to finalized the set victory. In the fourth set, St. Lawrence held a 19-16 lead after a pair of kills from Parker, but the Brewers came storming back, tying the set three times, including 24-all after an attacking error by the home team. Despite the momentum, Vassar could not hold off the Saints, who forced the fifth set after back-to-back kills for the 26-24 edge.

The final set of the match was incredibly tight until midway as Vassar battled back to tie it at 11-all. The Brewers grabbed a 13-11 lead, but the Saints countered with four straight points to seal the set win and match victory.

SLU saw Natalie Piper notch 17 kills with 20 digs, Amanda Teppo added 14 kills, three service aces, five digs, a block solo and four block assists, while Annika Kreppein had 11 kills. Jenna Britton owned 32 assists with 10 digs, as Vivian Susko added 16 digs.

For Vassar, Basler-Chang added 18 digs and three service aces in addition to her match-high 18 kills. Sophomore Sara Ehnstrom added 14 kills with a match-high 20 digs, as sophomore Madison Wilson achieved a match-best 41 assists to go with 11 digs.
