POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY) netted a penalty kick goal in the final 42 seconds of the second half to give the Vassar men's soccer team the 2-1 victory against Baruch on Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers were down 1-0 at halftime, but managed to rally to snap a three-game losing streak. Vassar now moves to 3-3-1, while the Bearcats fall to 2-4-1.
The Brewers controlled the offensive possession, outshooting Baruch 17-4 and held a 6-1 corner advantage. It was the visiting Bearcats on the board first, scoring at the 15
th minute. Baruch's Shaiem Allah Morad took a pass from Luis Munoz on the left side of the box. Allah Morad then angled the shot over goalkeeper
Will Marment (Stamford, CT) into the right corner of the goal to take the 1-0 lead.
Vassar had a few chances in the half to even the game, but could not break through the Bearcats' defense. It was not until the final 14 minutes of the second half that the Brewers were able to connect. At 76:37, Geraghty shot from inside the Baruch box and hit a Bearcats' defender. The ball bounced off the player and deflected straight into the back of the net before the goalkeeper could react. Only one shot was taken by either side following the goal and overtime appeared to be looming. Action got heated in the final minutes of play and Geraghty drew a foul to gain a penalty kick. The sophomore kept clam under pressure and launched the ball into the right side to put Vassar up 2-1.
With under a minute to play, the Bearcats did not manage another shot attempt, and Vassar secured the win. Geragthy led the team with four shots, while
Jonathan Bow (San Francisco, CA) and
Hawkins Barratt Heitmann (Cutchogue, NY) each had two.
Vassar begins Liberty League play this Saturday when they welcome Bard to Gordon Field at 2 p.m. The game also serves as the Grassroot Soccer charity game.
