POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 2, 2019) – The Brewers will travel to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY to compete for the Liberty League Championship from Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5. Their first match will be against fourth-seeded Ithaca College at 2:15 p.m. at the Reis Tennis Center.
The Brewers (8-9 overall, 4-4 Liberty League) are coming off of a hard-fought loss against Hobart last Saturday to close out the regular season, but secured the fifth seed for the conference tournament. Ithaca (5-12, 4-4 Liberty League) is coming off of a 6-3 loss to Trinity College and a 7-2 loss against RPI to end their regular season. Adam Krueger (Bay Village, OH) and junior
Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA) at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Vassar has a .604 overall winning percentage in Liberty League singles matches. Sokolov has been a dominating force for the Brewers, leading the team in singles play at 12-5 overall, 6-1 in conference, and 7-3 in his last 10 appearances. Junior
Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ) has had a strong singles campaign, going 8-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. Kreuger also picked up 10 wins this season, 4 of those in the Liberty League, primarily at the No. 4 spot. In doubles play, the team of Sokolov and Auh lead Vassar, going 9-8 overall and 7-7 in the Liberty League at the No. 1 spot. The team of
Nicolas Demaria (New Hyde Park, NY) and Matthew Yee (Sha Tin, Hong Kong) has also had a strong campaign, going 3-2 in conference play.
The Bombers are bringing a strong team, led by junior Minos Stavrakos. He currently is leading Ithaca with a 14-10 overall record in singles play and 11-12 record in doubles. The No. 1 doubles team of Stravrakas and Colten Lavery could pose a challenge for the Brewers, as they have gone 4-3 in regular season play. Another strong member of the Ithaca squad is senior Sam McGrath, who has gone 9-10 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League at the No. 2 position.
The winner between Vassar and Ithaca will move on to face to face first-seeded Skidmore at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 in the semifinals.
