Thoroughbreds No Match For Brewers In Season Finale

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) scored five goals and became just the second player in Vassar history to score 40 goals in a season, as the Brewers cruised 9-3 over Skidmore on Wednesday evening.

With the win, Vassar ends the regular season at 4-11 overall and 2-6 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, Skidmore drops to 4-11 and 1-7 in the conference.

Mullen tallied his seventh-straight hat trick, and ninth of the season, in the first quarter. An early man-up scenario allowed fellow junior Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) to find Mullen for the opening score. Senior James Thomas (Manhasset, NY) launched in the unassisted goal at 7:25. Sophomore Michael Killion (McLean, VA) kept the Brewers rolling when he picked up Mullen for another score. After a Skidmore turnover, Mullen helped Spencer Duryee score his 16th goal of the year, dishing out the assist at 2:28. Mullen had the final score of the quarter to put Vassar up 5-0.

Vassar carried over into the second when Adams scored the unassisted goal at 11:00. The Thoroughbreds got on the board a minute later to cut the lead to 6-1, but Mullen caused a turnover that allowed him to score at 9:18 and again with 46 seconds left in the half.

Vassar was held scoreless in the third, but notched one goal in the final 33 seconds of the fourth. Thomas picked up his second assist of the night, finding James Hueston (Denver, CO) for the final score.
Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) was almost perfect at faceoffs, winning 14-of-16. He also collected 11 groundballs. Lowery has won .675 percent of faceoffs this season, breaking his own school record. Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY) and Matt Boyd (Essex Fells, NJ) split time between the pipes. Boyd had 10 saves, while Mikelinich had four.
