Brewers Down Engineers In Double Overtime Thriller

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) scored just over a minute into the second overtime period, as the Vassar women's lacrosse team (6-6, 3-4 Liberty) won 16-15 over visiting RPI (6-5, 3-5 Liberty). Fable, along with three other Brewers, finished with five points.

The Brewers built up to a commanding 11-5 first half lead. Freshman Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY) scored two goals in the first three minutes and then assisted on Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) score to jump out to a 3-1 lead. MacLeod then found the back of the net a minute later. RPI tacked on two goals to pull within one, but Porette then recorded her fourth hat trick of the year to make in 5-3.

The Engineers scored at 13:07, but four-straight Vassar goals made it 9-4. Fable scored her first of the day off a MacLeod feed at 11:10 and then Porette found net at 9:16. Two more scores from MacLeod and Tess Waters (Skokie, IL) kept the Brewers moving. Waters and Fable netted the final two scores of the half.

RPI began to pick up in the second after trading a pair of goals with Vassar in the first nine minutes. The Engineers went on a 4-0 run before Fable scored her fourth goal of the game at 9:26. RPI then went on another 4-0 to take a 15-14 lead with 3:44 remaining. After a RPI foul, Waters made the clutch free position goals with two seconds remaining to force extra minutes.

After Fable won the draw control in the first overtime, the Brewers rattled off three shots, but could not connect. Porette won the draw control in the second and then after a scramble in front of the Engineers' net, Fable snuck the game winner in at 1:56.

MacLeod finished with five points on three goals and two assists, while Porette had four goals and an assist. Fable tallied five goals. Waters added three points, and both Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) and Melanie Silverman (Southbury, CT). Emily Hamburger (Clarksville, MD) also had a goal.

MacLeod and Porette proved troublesome for the Engineers' offense, with MacLeod causing four turnovers and Porette causing three. Porette also had a team-high 10 draw controls and five groundballs. Freshman Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) picked up the win in goal and made five saves.

Vassar is back in action tomorrow to face Ithaca at 3 p.m. for the Brewers' senior day.
