POTSDAM, N.Y. – A five-goal performance put junior
Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) over the 100-career points plateau on Saturday afternoon. The attackman now ranks in the top-ten in program history. Freshman
Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY) also recorded his fourth hat trick of the year, but it was not enough as the Brewers fell 13-12 to Clarkson.
In a hard fought contest, Vassar went up 8-4 at halftime over the Golden Knights. Clarkson got on the board first, but four-straight Brewers goals in the first quarter kept the momentum all Vassar. Mullen scored or assisted on every goal in the first, netting Vassar's first off the Tomas Meade (Corvallis, OR) assist at 6:30. He then helped Hyde tack on his first goal at 3:36, and then scored two consecutive to close the quarter.
Two minutes into the second, Vassar kept the pressure up when Mullen netted his third-straight two minutes in off a
James Thomas (Manhasset, NY) feed. Clarkson would cut the lead to 6-3 after two goals, but the Brewers responded with two of their own from Meade and Mullen. The Golden Knights scored in the final 30 seconds of the half to keep it a four-goal game.
Clarkson began to rally in the second half, outscoring Vassar 6-2 in the third. Two goals in the first three minutes lessened the lead to 9-6, but Thomas tallied a man-down goal soon after. A three-score run into the fourth gave the Golden Knights the 11-10 lead.
Connor Deehan made the unassisted shot at 9:45 to tie it 11-11, but Clarkson would score two more times. Hyde then netted the final goal of the game at 6:58, but the Golden Knights hung on for the 13-12 victory.
Mullen finished with six points on five goals and one assist, while Hyde had five points with three goals and two assists. Thomas had two goals and an assist and Mead had a goal and an assist.
Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) won 22-of-29 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 13 groundballs. On defense,
Zack Henig (Millstone, NJ),
Cooper Vorel (Boonton Township, NJ) and
Isaac Gallogly (Allison Park, PA) each had two caused turnovers.
Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY) made eight saves starting in goal.
Vassar is home their next two games, starting with a non-conference match against Hamilton on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Gordon Field.
