MADISON, N.J. - Led by sophomore
Alessandra Fable's (Orlando, FL) career-high six goals and a career-best seven points from junior
Kelly Pushie (Mahwah, NJ), the Vassar women's lacrosse team (0-1) lost a high scoring affair to Drew (3-0) on Friday afternoon at Ranger Stadium. Five Brewers notched at least two goals in the 18-15 loss.
Vassar took a 10-8 first half lead, but the Rangers surged in the second by scoring six-straight goals to power Drew to a three-goal victory.
In addition to Fable and Pushie, freshman
Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY) had a well-rounded collegiate debut with five points (two goals, three assists). Seniors
Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY) and
Emily Hamburger (Clarksville, MD) both tallied three points apiece. MacLeod had two goals and an assist, while Hamburger had a goal and two assists. Junior
Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) registered two goals to round out the Vassar scoring.
The Brewers had a strong first half, jumping out to a 5-3 lead in the first eight minutes. Two scores from Drew tied the game 5-5 at 14:00, and the action went back-and-forth until it was 8-8 at 4:11. Vassar closed the half with goals from Waters and Fable to take the two-score lead.
Fable carried her momentum from the first, netting the goal 40 seconds into the second. Unfortunately, Drew bounced back with a six-goal run from 28:50 to 19:48 to take a 14-11 advantage. Goals from Hamburger and Pushie made it a one-score game, but Drew responded with two-straight goals of their own. Fable would score once more from a Pushie assist at 4:11 to make it 17-15, but Drew would not give up the lead.
On defense, juniors
Tillie Newcomb (Denver, CO) and
Sydney Nemphos (Baltimore, MD) scooped up six groundballs each. MacLeod led Vassar with three caused turnovers, while Newcomb, Waters and Fable each had two.
The Brewers continue their four-game road trip at Wesleyan on Wed. Mar. 6 at 6 p.m. next.
