Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brewers Fall To Hot-Shooting Knights In NCAA Tournament

AMHERST, Mass. – A historic season came to an end on Friday evening. The Vassar women's basketball team fell to Geneseo 74-55 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to close the season 21-7. The Brewers conclude the year with its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament and a program record 16-game win streak during the regular season.

The Brewers started slow, with the Knights doubling up Vassar 19-8 with 3:22 left in the first. Momentum began to swing when at 1:46 Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) drained a three put the Brewers on a 7-0 run to close the quarter. Julia Roellke (Poughkeepsie, NY) hit a jumper in the final seconds to cut the Geneseo lead to 23-19 heading into the second.

After Rollke hit another jumper to open the second, Vassar kept the game within two points, but a strong three-point Geneseo offense maintained the lead. Lindsay Halpin sank a triple at 7:36 to keep the Knights up 28-23. Peczuh answered with a three to chip away, and that spurred a 6-0 run before Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) made a layup off a Peczuh feed at 3:16. Peczuh then stole the ball on the next Knights' possession and scored off a breakaway layup to make it 34-32. The Knights would hit another three before the half, but Lexi Mousley (Jericho, VT) made a jump shot with 16 seconds to keep it 37-34.

Geneseo came out hot in the third; opening with a trey 14 seconds in and extended their lead to 45-35 at 6:08. DeOrio scored six of the next eight Vassar points to get the offense going again, but Geneseo always responded after a Brewers' run. The Knights connected on a pair of free throws at 2:26 to go up 52-43, and then a DeOrio jumper and Peczuh three put it at 52-48. Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) beat the buzzer and the Brewers only trailed 54-50 heading into the fourth.

Unfortunately, the Vassar momentum did not carry into the final quarter. The Knights outscored the Brewers 20-5 while shooting 71.4 percent from beyond the arc. Vassar fought hard until the end though, but fell 74-55.

DeOrio finished with a team-high 16 points and Nick added 12 points with six boards. Peczuh had 10 points and five rebounds, while Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA) tallied seven points and four rebounds.

With the victory, Geneseo now faces either Amherst or Husson in the second round.
