Nick Scores 1000th Point In Win Over RPI

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) scored a game-high 15 points, including her 1000th of her career, as the Brewers bounced back for a 56-38 win over RPI on Saturday afternoon. The first place Brewers improve to 14-2 and 20-3 overall, while the Engineers drop to 11-11 and 6-9.

The Vassar defense limited RPI to nine first half points and did not allow a single Engineers' basket in the second quarter. With only 11 points needed to hit 1000, Nick scored the first four Vassar points. Skylar Schmid (Natick, MA) put the Brewers up 10-6 at 4:52 behind a layup to close the first quarter.

Neither side scored in the first three minutes of the second quarter before Dani Douglas (Kalispell, MT) sank a three off a Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA) feed to push the lead to 18-9. While Vassar did not allow an Engineers' basket, RPI limited the Brewers' offense to nine points. At 5:17 Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) connected for the layup and then Gillooly found Jackie Cenan (Laguna Beach, CA) for another score. Gillooly finished with a team-high three assists. Nick had six points and five rebounds in the first half and Cenan scored four points with four rebounds.

Brewers led 24-9 going into the third, and the RPI offense opened on an 8-3 run to pull within 10 at 7:41. After a slump in the action, Gillooly hit a jumper to make the Vassar lead 12 at 5:12. The Engineers would chip back in, cutting the lead to 33-25 in the final minute, but Cenan hit a free throw to give the Brewers a nine-point advantage heading into the final act.

The fourth quarter was all Vassar. The Brewers shot 8-of-9 from the field, while holding RPI to just 5-of-14. Nick collected her 1000th point on a layup while being fouled and finished 4-of- 9 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds. Cenan registered a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Gillooly grabbed a career-high seven rebounds.

Courtney Lewis paced the Engineers with 14 points, while Celia Tomlinson scored 12 points with a team-high eight rebounds.

The Brewers now return home for the final two games of the regular season and face William Smith on Friday at 5 p.m.
