ROCHESTER, N.Y. – An offensive rebound and layup at the buzzer by
Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY) lifted the Vassar College men's basketball team (10-12, 6-9 Liberty) to a 75-73 victory over RIT (5-16, 2-12 Liberty) at Clark Gym on Friday night. With the win, their second straight, the Brewers moved within a game of RPI for the sixth and final place in the Liberty League Tournament.
It was a 73-73 game with 17 seconds left when
Lance Tebay (Virginia Beach, VA) blocked Marcell Davis' layup. Tebay then stole the ball away from Davis on the rebound, giving possession back to the Brewers with 16 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Vassar held for one shot.
Alex Seff's (Arlington, VA) jumper was off the mark, but Bromfeld was right there to scoop up the rebound and sink the game-winning layup just before time expired.
He finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while also distributing three assists. Tebay had a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds, and Seff added 16 points.
Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) notched nine points and grabbed a team-best seven boards, as the Brewers held a 40-33 edge on the glass. As a team, Vassar shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the field, 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from long range, and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) at the free throw line.
Tebay sank a three-pointer 3:40 into the contest to give the Brewers an 11-10 lead, but RIT responded with a 10-0 run to take a 20-11 advantage. After Vassar trimmed the margin to three points at 22-19, the Tigers went on a 13-5 spurt to regain an 11-point cushion, 35-24, with 4:46 left in the first half. Back-to-back Seff treys again brought the Brewers within three, 37-34, and the margin was five points, 41-36, at halftime.
After RIT regained an eight-point edge, 59-51, with 13:00 remaining in the game, Vassar scored eight of the next 10 points to get back within two, 61-59. The Tigers pushed the gap back to eight points at 71-63 before Grinde tallied four straight points and Tebay added a three to bring the Brewers within one, 71-70, with 3:43 to go.
The Tigers got a dunk from Cobey Adekanbi on their next possession before Grinde went 1-for-2 a thte line to make it 73-71 RIT with 2:43 remaining. It would remain that way for nearly two minutes until a Bromfeld jumper tied it at the 44-second mark. He then secured the Brewers' second straight victory with his rebound and put back at the final horn. The final score was Vassar's only lead of the second half.
For RIT, Jaymee Rosser led the way with 21 points and three assists. Davis finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Adekanbi tallied on 5-for-6 shooting off the bench. The Tigers shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor, 48 percent (12-of-25) from downtown, and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) at the charity stripe.
Vassar concludes its road schedule with a 4 p.m. showdown at RPI (12-10, 7-8 Liberty) on Saturday. The Engineers notched a 71-60 victory over the Brewers when the sides met at the Athletic & Fitness Center on Jan. 11.
