Strong First Half Holds Off Raptors

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Vassar women's basketball team (18-2, 12-1 Liberty) pushed its winning streak to 15 with a commanding 77-55 win at Bard (5-14, 0-13 Liberty) on Friday evening. With the win, Vassar clinches a playoff berth in the Liberty League Tournament.

All 11 Brewers saw action, with 10 scoring five or more points. Junior Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) paced the offense with 15 points behind 6-of-8 shooting. Freshman Dani Douglas (Kalispell, MT) posted 10 points and made two steals. Sophomore Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) had nine points and dished out a team-high five assists.

Skylar Schmid (Natick, MA) matched her career-high six rebounds and also had six points. Lexi Mousley (Jericho, VT) had a strong defensive game with a career-best five blocks. She also grabbed five rebounds. The Brewers as a team were dominant on the glass, outrebounding Bard 40-28

The Brewers opened on an 8-0 run to start the first quarter. The run started with an Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) three-pointer and then Nick made a jumper off a Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA) assist. Bard made a pair of free throws, but Vassar then exploded on a 12-0 run before Bard's Jess Rylander made a triple to make the score 20-5. Natalie Pettirossi (Weston, MA) sank a layup in the final seconds to push the Brewers' lead to 17.

Vassar only outscored Bard 18-13 in the second stanza, but the Raptors never pulled within closer than 14 in the half. Meanwhile, the Brewers led by as much as 22. Overall, the Vassar defense held the Raptors to just 20.7 percent shooting in the first half while converting 54.5 percent of their own shots.

The Brewers scored 37 points in the second half with Bard outscoring Vassar 22-18 in the fourth. A dominant first half from Vassar kept the Raptors in check though.

Vassar continues Liberty League play tomorrow night at Union. Game starts at 2 p.m.
