ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – After playing seven straight at the Athletic & Fitness Center, the Vassar College men's basketball team hit the road for the first time in nearly a month on Friday night. In the opener of a four-game road trip, the Brewers (8-12, 4-9 Liberty) fell to Bard (12-8, 8-5 Liberty) by a 76-67 count at the Stevenson Athletic Center.
The first half was tightly-contested, as there were six ties and three lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. With the score knotted at 32-32, three straight Vassar buckets gave the Brewers a six-point, 38-32, advantage at the 2:04 mark. However, the Raptors closed the period on a 7-0 run, and Bard took the lead, 39-38, when David Runcie sank a trey just before the halftime buzzer.
Bard increased its cushion to four, 42-38, on a Stamatis Koulouris three-pointer early in the second half. After the Brewers pulled within two at 44-42, the Raptors went on a 28-11 spurt to open up a 19-point gap, 72-53, with 4:05 to go. Vassar responded with 12 of the next 14 points to trim its deficit to nine, 74-65, but the Brewers ran out of time in the 76-67 defeat.
Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA) posted his second double-double of the season (and first since the season opener) for the Brewers. He finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Alex Seff (Arlington, VA) tallied a team-high 14 points, while
Lance Tebay (Virginia Beach, VA) had 13 points, seven boards and four assists.
Mason Dyslin (Yorktown Heights, NY) added 10 points, and
Chris Gallivan (East Walpole, MA) grabbed seven rebounds.
Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY), meanwhile, registered nine points and six boards, as the Brewers held a 47-34 edge on the glass. Vassar shot 39.1 percent (27-of-69) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from long range, and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) at the charity stripe.
For Bard, Justyn Rogers led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds. He also collected four assists. Jelani Bell-Isaac contributed 14 points off the bench, and Runcie registered 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with five assists. Armando Dunn had 11 points and six rebounds, while Alijah Rue posted nine points, six boards and seven assists. Zack Jacobs added six assists for the Raptors, who shot 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from the floor. Bard went 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) from downtown and 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) at the free throw line.
On Saturday, Vassar returns to action with a 4 p.m. matchup at Union (8-11, 4-9 Liberty). The Dutchmen earned a 65-60 win when the squads met in Poughkeepsie on Jan. 18.
