POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -Â The second game of the day at the Farm saw the Vassar men put the disappointment of the last two weeks behind them and they did enough to earn their 4th win of the year taking their record over .500 at 4-3. Molloy College players ran straight and hard and asked questions of the Vassar defense but they were repelled and in the end it was the home team that triumphed.
It was very pleasing to see the Vassar scrum be in such a dominant mood. It helped set the tone in a game that turned out to be a lot tighter than the first few minutes suggested.
Vassar was able to retain possession and looked sharp and dangerous whereas the visitors seemed at ones and twos. As the game progressed Molloy did run hard off the fringes and Vassar had to front up and make head on tackles. The Molloy backs were a little too loose with their passing and it led to lost territory more often than not.
The first Vassar score was simple enough as Joe Nowacki ran from the base of the scrum and went over. The kick was missed so it was 5-0 Brewers.
That Vassar did not build significantly on this early lead probably owed as much to penalties given away at the breakdown as it did to dropping the ball in contact. Ball carriers just lost a handle on the ball and it allowed Molloy back into the match.
There was never that much between the two sides but one always had the feeling that if the Brewers could tidy up their game they'd be able to exert enough pressure and score.
James Christensen always looked a threat as the ball was moved wide and the tall fullback must be enjoying the season.
Cole Landolt was a threat at 13 and although
Rowan Roshong made some uncharacteristic handling errors he did enough to occupy the defense, thus freeing up tha outside space.
Ali Sadek and
Mike Cardenas scrummaged strongly and both had some open field runs. In addition
Kyle Trumble put in some tackles thwarting the backrow attack of the Molloy team.
The season finishes for the Brewers next Sunday at Drew University and although there is no playoff spot at stake there will be a win at all costs attitude to finish the fall with a winning record.
Overall record: 4-3-0.
