POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a double-figure effort from five different players, the Vassar College women's basketball team won the 2019 Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament with an 81-54 victory over Worcester State University in the championship game. The Brewers are now 2-0 on the season, while the Lancers move to 3-2. In the consolation game, Eastern University posted a 70-51 victory over Oneonta State, moving the Eagles to 2-2 overall and the Red Dragons to 1-2.
Pacing the effort for the Brewers in the tournament win was senior guard
Jackie Cenan (Laguna Beach, CA), who was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting a game-high 14 points. She also added an assist, a block and two steals. Freshman guard
Emily Tincher (Pleasanton, CA) boasted 13 points with an assist and a block, while Tournament Most Valuable Player,
Sophie Nick (Denver, CO) poured in 12 points, eight rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals. Senior guard
Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) added 11 points with a game-high four assists, while junior guard
Ryan DeOrio (Collegville, PA) had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor.
Leading the Lancers was senior guard Mya Mosley (Worcester, MA), who had 13 points with a game-best nine rebounds. She also added two assists, a block and a steal. Sophomore forward Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, MA) chipped in with 12 points, while junior guard Colleen Cutting (Auburn, MA) garnered All-Tournament Team recognition after posting eight points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Vassar came out swinging in the opening quarter, taking an eight-point lead (15-7) at the 4:17 mark on a three-pointer from DeOrio. A layup from Mosley helped cut the deficit for the visiting Lancers with 1:15 left in the stanza, but a trey from Peczuh put the home team up by nine (20-11) seconds later. Worcester State opened the second stanza with momentum as they cut into the Vassar lead early, trailing 24-15 at 6:46 following a make at the line by senior guard Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, MA). A shot from downtown by Tincher gave the Brewers a 13-point advantage, but a countering three from Mosley, along with a layup from senior forward Shaye Lane (Dracut, MA) kept the margin at 10 (31-21) with 3:57 to go. Natalie Pettirossi (Weston, MA) and a trey from Cenan sent the Brewers into half with a 39-23 advantage.
In the third quarter, Vassar kept up the momentum, owning a 19-point advantage (49-30) by the 6:06 mark after a DeOrio layup. DeOrio went on to score five more points, while Cenan added three to push the score to 57-38 at the 3:56 mark. Tincher gave the Brewers their largest lead of the game to that point at the 1:28 clip with a three and sophomore guard
Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA) was clutch at the line with one second left to nail a pair of shots for a 64-40 lead at the end of the quarter. Vassar's defense continued to make its mark in the final quarter, as the Brewers matched each basket to maintain their sizeable advantage. Tincher was stellar over the final 2:41, scoring seven of her 13 points in the contest.
The tournament's consolation match saw the Eagles best the Red Dragons by a 70-51 margin. Junior guard Minika Glenn (Philadelphia, PA) garnered All-Tournament Team honors after finishing with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists in the win. Two other players reached double-figures for Eastern as junior guard Naomi Harris (Stratford, CT) and sophomore Jaelyn Harris (Richmond, VA) had 11 and 10 points, respectively. For Oneonta State, senior center Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park, NY) made her way onto the All-Tournament Team after recording 10 points with four rebounds and four assists.
Vassar returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Williams College for a 7pm tilt.
