Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Vassar Falls to Ithaca on Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Bombers scored three goals to hold on for the shutout win. Vassar now drops to 10-1 and 2-1 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca moves to 8-2 and 3-0 in the conference.

The game also served as Vassar's senior day, with Liz Rotolo, Rylie Pope, Stephanie Palma, Sam Plante, and Cristina Lopez all starting.

The Bombers played hard from the start, not allowing a single Vassar shot in the first quarter. Ithaca controlled the ball in Vassar territory and at 7:12, Kendell Keil slipped the shot in off a cross from Brianna Lennon. Ithaca kept moving in the second quarter. At 26:52, the Bombers drew a penalty stroke. Morgan Mullen lined up and flicked the ball in the upper left corner to put Ithaca up 2-0.

The Brewers nearly scored in the final two minutes when Lopez had the open opportunity, but the shot sailed wide right.

A scoreless third quarter followed with Vassar limited to three shots. Dara Studnitzer had the lone shot on goal that was deflected by goalkeeper Savanna Lenker. Ithaca scored again early in the fourth off a penalty corner at 47:41. The ball was inserted to the left side and Victoria Sestito's initial shot was redirected into the back of the net by Jacqueline Mirabile. The Brewers rattled off seven shots in the fourth, but were unable to mount a comeback.

Rotolo picked up the start in goal and made one save. Freshman Jules Smith also found time between the pipes and had three saves. Ithaca's Lenker had seven saves.

Vassar is back in action on Monday, Oct. 14 to face Christopher Newport at 6 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
