ROCHESTER, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Vassar College women's soccer team opened its Liberty League schedule by visiting No. 15 RIT. And, just like their meeting with the Tigers in last season's Liberty League semifinals, the Brewers came away with the victory. Vassar (5-2-1, 1-0-0 Liberty) got a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 win over RIT (4-2-0, 0-1-0 Liberty) at Tiger Stadium.
Vassar had a few early chances before finally converting in the 19
th minute.
Skylar Herrera-Ross (Alameda, CA) took a feed from
Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ) and buried it into the back of the net for her first career goal. It would remain 1-0 until the 77
th minute, when the Brewers doubled their lead on a strike by
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA).
Savannah Cutler (Deer Park, TX) assisted on the tally, which was Tanner's sixth goal in as many games.
RIT launched 13 second-half shots and had three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes (the Tigers outshot the Brewers 21-10 for the game), but the Vassar defense and goalkeeper
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) held off the Tigers' late push. Walsh (4-2-1) was credited with two of her four saves in the second half, as she posted her first solo clean sheet of the season.
This marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Brewers have won their Liberty League opener. Vassar, which hadn't beaten a ranked opponent since topping No. 21 St. Lawrence in 2015, also extended its unbeaten streak to five straight contests.
Ingrida Ivaska (2-2-0) took the loss after playing the first half between the pipes for the Tigers. She made three saves before being relieved by Alyssa Salls, who allowed one goal over the final 45 minutes.
The Brewers will now have a week off before returning to action. Vassar visits Union (3-4-1, 0-1-0 Liberty) next Saturday at 2 p.m.
