TROY, N.Y. – Following a win over a nationally ranked team might cause a group to relax, but not for the No. 16 Vassar field hockey team. The Brewers picked up their fifth-consecutive shutout in the Liberty League opener by defeating the Engineers 4-0 at Harkness Field on Saturday afternoon.
Vassar (7-1, 1-0 Liberty) outshot RPI (0-7, 0-1 Liberty) 12-1 in the first half. RPI's Rachel Kaufman seemed to be unbreakable, making six saves. It was not until the final second that freshman
Sophie McGrath (Yarmouth, ME) picked up her first-career goal off a
Cristina Lopez feed to make the score 1-0 at halftime.
To push their lead, the Brewers took 14 shots in the second half while scoring three more times.
Sam Plante (Watertown, MA) assisted
Niki Rizzo (Andover, NJ) early on for her first goal of the season.
Dara Studnitzer (New City, NY) would get in on the action soon after, scoring off a
Natalie Johnston (Trappe, PA) pass at 58:35. After recording an assist earlier, Plante pushed the score to 4-0 from the help of
Megan Caveny (Cicero, NY) to cement the 4-0 victory.
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) managed her fourth shutout of the season while making four saves. The junior now holds a 0.39 goals against average.
The Brewers return home on Wed. Sept. 26 for some non-conference action against Hartwick at 4 p.m.
