POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Vassar College women's soccer team returned to Gordon Field for the first time since the season opener. And this game ended in a similar fashion. The Brewers scored a pair of first-half goals and goalkeeper
Camelia Manring (Indianapolis, IN) made four saves, as Vassar (4-2-0) picked up its third straight win, 2-0 over Oneonta (2-3-0).
Oneonta controlled the pace of play early on, but Manring posted three saves in the first 17 minutes to keep the game scoreless. Vassar's first scoring opportunity came on a counterattack in the 18
th minute.
Gabi Tulk (Chicago, IL) got through the defense and connected with
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA), who turned and fired a shot from just outside the box past the keeper and into the lower left corner. The Brewers doubled their lead less than three minutes later when
Sara Seper's (New Hyde Park, NY) perfectly placed ball down the middle of the field was put home by
Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ).
"At first we started out a bit disorganized," Manring said. "But once we started playing our game, we really took off. We worked hard for a shutout and a win."
The Red Dragons had a chance to cut into the advantage in the 74
th minute, but Christina Kornfeld's strike hit the post. That would prove to be Oneonta's best scoring opportunity, as the Brewers recorded their first shutout since the season-opening win over New Paltz on Aug. 31.
Tanner's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season, while Ferry found the back of the net for the third time, all of which have come at Gordon Field. Manring (1-0-0) was credited with a clean sheet in her first career start.
Claire Lepper (2-3-0) started in goal for the Red Dragons and took the loss. Jolene Krom played the second half in net and stopped a pair of Vassar shots, as the Brewers outshout Oneonta 13-11.
This marked the start of a span where Vassar plays six out of eight at home. The Brewers continue the string on Wednesday afternoon, when they conclude their non-conference slate against Montclair State (4-0-1) at 4 p.m.
