WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Vassar College women's volleyball team faced a tough road test against Williams on Wednesday night. There was a total of 30 ties and 19 lead changes in the match, but it was the Brewers (5-4) who won the key points late in each set to notch a 26-24, 26-24, 25-22 victory over the Ephs (4-1) at the Chandler Athletic Center.
After Vassar scored the first three points of the match, Williams rallied to go up 6-4. The Brewers eventually built a 15-11 advantage before the Ephs countered with a 5-1 run to even the score at 16-16. Williams held a 23-22 lead when Vassar won back-to-back points to reach set point. Williams took the next point to tie it at 24-24, but
Jane McLeod (New York, NY) responded with a kill to give the Brewers their second set point opportunity. This time Vassar converted, clinching the set by a 26-24 count.
Vassar fell behind 12-10 in the second set before going on a 9-4 run to take a 19-16 lead. However, Williams rallied for seven of the next nine points to pull ahead 23-21. After the Ephs got to set point at 24-22, consecutive
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA) kills brought the Brewers even at 24-24. Vassar earned a set point of its own at 25-24, then
Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, OR) served an ace to give the Brewers a 26-24 set win.
In the third set, the Brewers raced out to an early 4-0 advantage. After the Ephs stormed back to go up 13-10, Vassar used an 8-3 spurt to regain the lead, 18-16. Williams went back in front, 20-19, before McLeod ripped a kill to spark a 4-0 rally that brought the Brewers within two points of victory. Vassar reached match point when
Sara Ehnstrom's (Kaneohe, HI) kill made it 24-22, and the Brewers closed out the 3-0 sweep by capturing the third set, 25-22.
McLeod had her third straight double-double for the Brewers, finishing with 12 kills and 10 digs. Ehnstrom added a career-high 10 kills, while Gallagher tallied eight kills and 10 digs.
Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO), meanwhile, posted 33 assists and nine digs. Ninkovich registered 13 digs and three aces, and
Jorden Schreeder (Saratoga, CA) notched 12 digs and three aces. As a team, Vassar hit .147 (40 kills, 19 errors, 143 attempts) in the victory.
For the Ephs, Erin Denham led the way with 12 kills and 15 digs. Alex Newton also recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs, while Roxi Corbeil contributed 11 kills. Olivia Hindy had four blocks, and Allison Frison tallied 13 digs, as Williams held a 70-61 edge in that category. The Ephs hit .134 (40-23-127) as a team.
On Saturday, the Brewers return to action with a pair of matches. Vassar will play a neutral-site contest against Stockton (6-3) at 12 p.m. before taking on host Hunter (6-0) at 2 p.m.
