Women's Tennis Falls In Liberty League Title Match

ITHACA, NY (May 6, 2018) -- The No. 29 ranked Vassar College women's team battled No. 18 Skidmore College in the Liberty League Championship match from Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, New York Sunday morning. VC was in all three doubles matches with the Thoroughbreds, but couldn't pick up a point as Skidmore used the sweep to pick up a 5-1 win and its eighth straight conference crown.

Vassar (14-6) fell behind 1-0 after Ada Wiggins and Renee Karchere-Sun topped VC's team of Sarra Yekta and Dasha Ivenitsky 8-3. Freshman Frances Cornwall and sophomore Tara Edwards fell 8-4 next to make the score 2-0, and senior Kate Christensen and junior Morgane Flournoy dropped a highly contested match at No. 1 doubles 8-5.

The Brewers looked to rally though in singles, and things looked good as Cornwall had no problems in picking up her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2. The freshman finished her season 15-7 overall, going 8-2 over her last 10 while ending the year with a three-match win streak.

Skidmore pushed to within one point of claiming the victory as Karchere-Sun topped Edwards 6-0, 6-3, and the Thoroughbreds earned the conference title as Laura Swenson defeated Courtney Geiss in a tight 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision.

Vassar had leads at No. 4 singles when the match ended, as Meghan Rodick took the first set 6-4 and was in a tiebreak at 6-6 in the second when the play was halted. Yekta was also leading her match at No. 6 singles, taking the opening set 7-5, with the second set deadlocked at two when the match was stopped.

The Brewers graduate four seniors, including one of the program's winningest player in Christensen, who posted  61 singles victories in her career. VC also says goodbye to Geiss, who earned 38 wins at Vassar, while Ivenitsky and Lauren Difazio combined for 37 wins over their tenures in singles action.

Skidmore (15-5)  earns the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, as the field will be announced this week.
