ITHACA, NY (May 4, 2018) – The Vassar College men's tennis team avenged an earlier season loss to Ithaca College Friday afternoon in the Liberty League Tournament quarterfinals, winning five of six matches in singles to pick up a 6-3 victory over the Bombers in play from the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University.
The Brewers will move on to take No. 25 Skidmore College Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the Liberty League semifinals. The win Friday was Vassar's first Liberty League Tournament victory since the 2013-14 season, and the Brewers will look to get back to the conference final for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign when they picked up their last Liberty League title.
Vassar picked up the early lead in doubles play, as sophomore
Allen Sokolov and junior
Nick Zuczek posted an 8-4 victory to take a 1-0 lead. Ithaca battled back with two hard fought doubles victories, as the Bombers evened the match at one with a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Minutes later, Sam McGrath and Lorenzo Vigule-Ramos knocked off
Jamie Anderson and
David Gandham 9-7 at No. 2 doubles to give IC a lead heading into singles.
That's when the Brewers would make their run, as Anderson started individual play with an emphatic 6-1, 6-0 victory over Vigule-Ramos at No. 5 to deadlock the match at two. Moments later, the Bombers (7-12) regained their lead with a win at No. 1 singles, but Vassar roared back at that point.
VC made the score 3-3 after a 6-1, 6-3 win by sophomore
Jeremy Auh at No. 4 singles, as he posted his ninth win of the season at singles. The Brewers earned their first match lead since 1-0 after a straight set win by
Adam Krueger, as he rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Colten Lavery, moving to within one win of clinching the team victory.
That moment would come at the exact same time, as Vassar clinched the win as the No. 6 and No. 2 matches ended simultaneously. Freshman
Nicolas Demaria posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over George Lomas to post his third straight singles win, while evening his season record at 7-7.
At No. 2 singles, Gandham earned his win right as Demaria finished his match, as he picked up a 6-2, 7-5 triumph to earn his team-leading 12
th singles victory of the season. For updates of Saturday's match with Skidmore, follow along with the Liberty League Twitter handle at @LLAthletics.
