Women's Lacrosse Season Ends In Overtime

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 28, 2018) – The Vassar women's lacrosse team fell in overtime on Senior Day to Union, 16-15, ending their regular season and playoff hopes.

The Brewers needed a win to stay in contention for the final spot in the Liberty League Tournament. But with the loss, they dropped to 4-6 against conference opponents and 5-10 overall, closing out their 2018 campaign.

It was a strong effort from Vassar as they held the lead for much of the game. Both Tessa Waters and Storm Sideleau each tallied five goals, amassing to two-thirds of the Brewers scores. Kelly Pushie added four points (1 goal, 3 assists), Fiona MacLoead had three points (1 goal, 2 assists), and Olivia O'Loughlin recorded two scores. Alessandra Fable added one goal while Grace Goodwin-Boyd added one assist.

The senior, O'Loughlin got the scoring going right away to put Vassar ahead 1-0. After the Dutchwomen tied it, Waters and Pushie put the Brewers back on top 3-1. Two more goals had the score knotted before Waters hammered home her second and third goals of the day to bring Vassar back in front with 11:40 on the clock.

Vassar held that one-goal lead through halftime, bringing an 8-7 edge in the locker room. And in the second half, they held on to that lead, always countering the Union scores.

The visitors finally broke through the Vassar defense as they scored three straight in a span of about two minutes to jump in front 15-14 with 4:05 remaining. But with 37 seconds remaining in regulation, Sideleau bullied her way to cage and fired a shot into the back of the net to force extra time.

In overtime, Union controlled possession until they found the shot they wanted. Cailin Pandolfi fed Emma Lowrey for the game-winner with 48 seconds to go in the extra frame.

The Brewer defense played a great game as Emily Chancey finished her career with a 14 save performance. Chancey concludes her career with 306 total saves, which is 7th all-time at Vassar. In front of her, Sydney Nemphos caused four turnovers and scooped up three groundballs to lead the defense.

Fable also played well in her final game as a rookie, leading the Brewers with five draw controls.
