WHITTIER, CA (March 20, 2018) – The Vassar College baseball team managed just five hits on Tuesday morning at Whittier College, as the host Poets pushed past the Brewers 9-0 in non-conference action from Huge B. Mendez Field to finish the Spring Break trip for Vassar.
The Brewers (2-5) and Poets were scoreless through the first three stanzas, but Whittier (13-9) took the lead in the bottom half of the fourth on a two-run homer by Michael Angulo. Whittier loaded the bases as well in the fourth, but junior reliever
Bryan Rubin got out of the jam to keep it 2-0.
In the top half of the fourth, Vassar had its best chance to get on the board, as senior
Bobby Kinne doubled down the right-field line to lead off the frame. Freshman
Elliott Layne was plunked, and both him and Kinne advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by junior
Matt Schwartz. The Brewers were unable though to push a run across, as Whittier starter Tim Turpen got a strikeout and ground out.
The Poets would use that momentum to add four more to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a Dmitri Washington triple into the right-field corner. From that point, VC would put just two runners on base over the final four innings as Whittier picked up the victory.
Kinne finished 1-for-3 on the day, as his double was the lone extra-base hit for Vassar, while junior
Jesse Mulham collected his first collegiate hit for the Brewers. Sophomore
Daniel Bonfiglio, along with freshmen
Matt McGannon and
Tanner Blough, posted singles for the Brewer offense.
Vassar starter
Mitchell Mullock allowed two earned runs and six hits over 3.2 innings in his first collegiate start. Sophomore
Robert Pinataro also worked a scoreless eighth on the mound against Whittier, which finished with 14 hits. Turpen went the distance for Whittier, striking out eight in the victory while walking none.
The Brewers will have a quick turnaround, jumping on a plane and flying home to head right back on the road to open Liberty League play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the University of Rochester.
