ROCHESTER, NY (February 20, 2018) – In the first Liberty League Tournament game since 2016, the Brewers fell just short at RIT in the First Round, 68-63.
Zach Bromfeld led the Vassar offense with 20 points and added seven rebounds.
Jesse Browne had 13 points, while
Paul Grinde and
B.J. White each chipped in 11. Grinde recorded a double-double grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds against the Tigers.
The Brewers had a strong first half, scoring 40 points in the opening 20 minutes. Browne scored all 13 of his points in those opening minutes to help Vassar hold the halftime edge.
The first half was back and forth, but tied at 34-34 with under two to go before the break, White put Vassar ahead at the free-throw line. Browne hit a triple for the Brewers and as time expired White hammered home a layup to grab a four point lead.
It didn't take long for RIT to make a come back after tying the ball game at 42-42 less than two minutes into the second frame. Grinde put Vassar ahead, but that only lasted a few possessions as the Tigers responded again and regained the lead at the 14:51 mark.
Three minutes later, the Brewers made a run to knot the game at 50-50. A jumper from Bromfeld and a three by White capped the quick five-point run. RIT took back the lead moments later and held off the Brewers.
Vassar stayed within two possessions but was never able to put together a run to get over the top. For the game, the team shot 39.7% from the floor and 28.6% from deep.
The Brewers finished their season with a 9-17 overall mark after going 8-10 in conference play.
