ROCHESTER, NY (February 11, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team picked up its second win in as many days Sunday afternoon, earning an 8-1 Liberty League victory over Rochester Institute of Technology in play from the Midtown Athletic Club. VC had defeated the University of Rochester 6-3 Saturday.
For the second straight afternoon, Vassar (4-1, 3-0 Liberty League) used a strong start in doubles to propel it to the victory. The Brewers opened the scoring at No. 2 doubles, as freshman
David Gandham and sophomore
Dom Demeterfi knocked off Jacob Meyerson and Mac Yang Li 8-6. VC would lead 2-0 thanks to a No. 3 doubles win, as
Nicolas Demaria and
Nick Zuczek breezed past Ben Lynaugh and Nick Lim 8-2.
The longest doubles affair would happen at the No. 1 position, but once again the Brewers were able to outlast their RIT foes at the top spot, as freshman
Adam Krueger and sophomore
Jeremy Auh defeated Chandler Libby and Jared Ingoglia 8-6. The duo is now 5-2 this season together, and is undefeated in Liberty League action.
Vassar moved to within one of clinching the match at No. 2, as Gandham chalked up his third Liberty League on the campaign with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ingoglia to make the score 4-0. The Brewers would clinch the match with the next decision, as junior
Jamie Anderson has returned from a semester abroad to start his season 2-0 thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Li at No. 4.
RIT (1-3, 0-2 LL) earned its lone win of the match at No. 1, as Libby knocked off Krueger 6-2, 6-1, but Vassar rebounded to pick up the final three matches. Auh earned his second win of the day with a victory at No. 3, as he won a first-set tiebreak 7-5 to take the early lead, and followed that up with a 6-3 triumph in the second set. Demeterfi had no problems at No. 5 singles, as he knocked off Michael Peters in 13 games thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 win, evening his season mark at 3-3 in singles.
The final match of the day was at No. 6 singles, and Demaria added his second victory of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win, moving his record to 2-1 in singles this year. "I'm really proud of the guys and how we played this weekend," said head coach
Alex Wong. "Rochester and RIT are two good teams and to walk away with two wins was a credit to the hard work that the team has been putting in."
"We knew it would be challenging and I am happy with how we responded," said Wong. "It was a great start to the spring season and we are looking forward to our next challenge." The next challenge will be just that for the Brewers, as they host No. 24 Skidmore College in Walker Field House at 1 p.m. next Saturday, February 17 in more conference action.
