Men's Basketball Takes Down RPI On Senior Day

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 10, 2018) – The Vassar men's basketball team improved to 7-9 in Liberty League action and jumped into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings. The Brewers topped RPI 70-62 in the AFC on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

Paul Grinde recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Browne scored above his average with 16 points and four rebounds while B.J. White tallied a career-high 14 points.

Tom Horvat led RPI with a game-high 31 points on 13-24 shooting from the field.

The Brewers had a strong first half, building an eight-point lead before the halftime break. Vassar went down early in the game, but two layups from Browne and a Lance Tebay three-pointer put VC on top 12-10 at the 11:06 mark.

With the score at 21-19 in favor of the home side, Browne and White hit back-to-back three's to put Vassar ahead by eight. After a pair of free-throws from Grinde and a layup by White in the final seconds, the Brewers carried their eight-point lead into the break.

Vassar ran up their lead to 15 just about midway through the second half as Steve Palecki hit back-to-back threes for the Brewers.

With a 14-point lead and seven minutes to play, RPI made their comeback. Over the next six minutes, the Engineers scored 14 points while holding the Brewers to just five to cut the lead to five with a minute and a half to go. Grinde converted the and-one play to thwart the visitor's momentum and guide the Brewers to victory.

Vassar as a team shot 45.3% from the field, including 59.1% from downtown.

The Brewers head to Hobart and Ithaca next Friday and Saturday for the final weekend of the regular season.
