Vassar Women In Final 4 For The Fifth Time In Six years

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina the Vassar Women will face a familiar foe in their USA Rugby National Fall Championship semifinal game that kicks-off at 4 p.m. The Brewers have played the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in the playoffs in each of the last 3 years.

In 2015 Vassar won 37-0 in the round of 16 played here in Poughkeepsie. The following year, 2016, at the Final 4 Vassar defeated Coast Guard 15-10 in the 3rd place playoff game at Furman University. Most recently last year, 2017, Vassar won 36-22 at this same point, the semifinal game.

When asked about the opponent Coach Brown stated, "We watched them this year in the Regional playoffs so we know what they bring to the field and respect these young players. They have some good open field runners and have performed consistently over the years."

The focus for the Brewers needs to be on their game and imposing it on the opposition. Additionally, the team needs to get organized quickly on defense and stifle the opposition if and when they have possession.

Last year Vassar lost in the Championship game 38-36 to Winona State. One has to credit the Minnesoate school for it staged a big comeback being 29-7 down in the second half. In the last 4 minutes, down 36-38 Vassar got over the line but the ball was judged to be held up. It was a harsh defeat and has served as a motivator for this year.

The squad will depart Vassar on Thursday morning and take the 12-hour bus ride to Charlotte. On Friday the Vassar students will practice after a study hall in the morning and then the semifinals will take place on Saturday at the Matthews Sportsplex.
